It’s no secret that many side-by-sides experience belt issues. Te main culprit? Heat.
When exposed to temperatures over 220° F, thermal degradation will begin to cause the properties of belts to change irreparably. Extreme heat will cause a belt to harden and stiffen when it cools, causing even more heat and friction each time the belt heats up again. This occurs because the stiffer belt won’t pull as easily over the clutches, and this friction causes the belt to heat up much faster than normal. Eventually this excessive heat will cause the belt to delaminate, begin to slip, stretch, and eventually come apart.
By avoiding the high temperatures at which heat damage can occur, you’ll be able to preserve belt life and get more miles from your belts. The best way to do this is with a belt temperature gauge. Many belt temperature gauges don’t actually measure belt temperature, but the air temperature inside the clutch cover instead. This simply is not an accurate way to track actual belt temperature. While a 200° F air temperature inside the clutch cover is a good indicator of a hot belt, we found that belts can actually heat up and cool of as much as 80° F in a matter of seconds. Coupled with the fact that clutch covers are designed to rapidly circulate air, a thermo couple inside the clutch cover cannot give an accurate picture of how hot a belt really is. But Razorback gauges can.
Track Actual Belt Temperature
Razorback gauges are the first in the industry to feature infrared sensors that monitor actual surface belt temperature. These infrared sensors are mounted on the removable clutch cover and are aimed directly at the cvt belt. This real-time reading of a belt’s surface temperature allows riders to avoid damaging temperatures and get more miles from their belts. We’ve programmed our gauges with screen inversion or LED alerts to warn riders when their belts reach temperatures at which heat damage can occur, letting them back of before they cook their belts.
Monitoring actual belt temperature is also a great indicator of clutch tuning and performance. With an infrared belt temperature gauge, riders are able to see exactly how adjustments or modifications impact the load that is placed on their belts. If a belt is heating up faster than normal or fails prematurely, it could be a result of increased friction to the sides of the belt resulting from misaligned clutches. A poorly tuned clutch setup with the wrong weights or a worn out spring could also contribute to belt slippage and generate unnecessary heat. Monitor Belt Life
When you ride with a Razorback Technology belt temp gauge, you’ll be able to monitor the condition of your belt as you ride.
Watch for how quickly belt temperature fluctuates. If a belt begins to heat up significantly faster from ride to ride, it is clear that belt condition should be a concern going forward. With the introduction of our 3.0 Edition gauge, we introduced Average and High Temperature tracking. When the average belt temperature increases by 40-50° F, it is time to start thinking about replacing the
belt. Another red fag of expiring belt life is a sudden temperature spike of real-time temperature. A 60-70° F jump usually signals that the belt is about to blow, and it is time to replace the belt before it completely goes.
